Sentinel Kamiza™ administrator technology and Sentinel Messaging™ Portal 2.8 released!

November 06, 2007

DigiTar™ is proud to announce the release of Sentinel Kamiza™ and Sentinel Messaging™ Portal 2.8! Both provide exciting new enhancements to the Sentinel Messaging™ customer experience! Portal revision 2.8 signifies a major evolution in the way both administrative and non-administrative customers interact with Sentinel Messaging™! Foremost among the enhancements is the introduction of Sentinel Kamiza™, DigiTar's premier administrative console for Sentinel Messaging™. Sentinel Kamiza™ and Sentinel Messaging™ 2.8 are a part of the Sentinel Messaging™ Fall 2007 service release.

Sentinel Kamiza™

Kamiza™ provides administrators comprehensive administrative control over a wide range of Sentinel Messaging™ functionality including:

  • Searchable and filterable access to the Sentinel Messaging™ User Directory for every domain belonging to the organization.
  • Full quarantine access via DoppelGanger™ technology. Authorized administrators can assume any user's persona and perform all Portal tasks available to the user (including releasing, whitelisting, or deleting messages).
  • Uncompromised access to view and/or modify all user settings (including passwords and whitelists).
  • Domain-wide access to per-user Sentinel Messaging™ statistics.

Key to Kamiza™ is its integration with the Sentinel Messaging™ Portal. No need to learn a new interface! By leveraging existing Portal interfaces and operations, Kamiza enables administrators to use the same familiar controls in administering their users that they use to manage their own personal Portal. Please contact your DigiTar account manager (sales@digitar.com) or DigiTar Support representative (support@digitar.com) for more information on accessing Kamiza™!

Sentinel Messaging™ Portal 2.8

Kamiza™ is not the only enhancement in the Sentinel Messaging™ Portal! Version 2.8 incorporates significant refinements to the Portal's end-user interface and operations. Informational displays have been enhanced to incorporate AJAX technology, thereby providing an even faster and more responsive end-user experience. Operations such as  message selection have also been improved to more closely anticipate the customer's intentions!

Key features of Sentinel Messaging™ Portal 2.8 include:

  • Major upgrade of user interface elements across the Portal, providing a fresh and consistent experience.
  • A new global status pane. The pane provides centralized display for detailed confirmations and information regarding the actions customers perform.
  • Collapsible informational panes now look and operate identically regardless of the information they display (i.e. "Status" pane and "View Full Headers" pane). Performance of the informational panes has also been significantly enhanced.
  • Tooltips sport an exciting new appearance which enables them to display vastly more information and to more clearly associate with the elements they clarify.
  • Faster and more responsive dialogs and windows!
  • Many more performance and user-requested enhancements!

All features of Sentinel Messaging™ Portal 2.8 and Sentinel Kamiza™ are available today! As with all Sentinel Messaging™ service enhancements, they are currently in-production for all existing customers. No installation or configuration! Simply log in to your personal Sentinel Messaging™ Portal to immediately enjoy the new enhancements! If you are not yet a Sentinel Messaging™ customer, please contact us today (sales@digitar.com) or request a free trial here: Sentinel Messaging™ Free Trial

intelliBLOCK: World breakthrough in Directory Harvest Attack protection!

October 29, 2007

DigiTar™ is proud to announce the introduction of intelliBLOCK™! The world's first directory harvest (DHA) blocking technology to keep spammers in the dark about your user list, while enabling notification of innocent senders who accidentally mistype an address. Along with intelliBLOCK™, DigiTar™ also introduces an industry first of empowering customers to choose the DHA blocking behavior that best suits their organization. intelliBLOCK™ is included with every Sentinel Messaging™ account and is available today for all existing customers!

Before intelliBLOCK™, customers had to live with the method of DHA blocking their e-mail security solution chose for them. Protection fell into two camps: no protection at all, or "stealth" protection. Stealth protection does indeed keep spammers from knowing which of the recipients they're targeting are valid. However, silently dropping messages to invalid recipients prevents innocent folks who mistype an e-mail address from knowing their message was not received. DigiTar™'s crack team of messaging engineers decided there was a better way...

Through a proprietary behavioral response, intelliBLOCK™ is able to inform legitimate senders when an address they've mistyped is incorrect, while preventing spammers from knowing which addresses don't exist. This type of selective response is absolutely necessary for organizations that are vitally dependent on the timely conveyance of critical e-mail. Organizations in this category range from law firms and financial institutions to government agencies...or anyone who relies on e-mail for their livelihood.

Key to the intelliBLOCK™ technology is the idea that one type of DHA protection does not fit all organizations. That is why Sentinel Messaging™ now supports 4 different types of DHA protection for our customers to choose from:

  • intellBLOCK™
  • Stealth
  • Passthrough
  • Disabled

Please contact (sales@digitar.com) your DigiTar partner or sales representative today to find out more about this exciting new technology and how Sentinel Messaging™ can help protect your organization.

Sentinel Messaging™ Portal enhancements released!

April 13, 2006

We're proud to announce the immediate availability of the April 2006 release of the Sentinel Messaging? Portal! We've worked hard to add some new visual enhancements that we hope will make it even easier for you to quickly access the functionality you want. This release also removes some minor usability bugs reported by our customers.

The April 2006 release was deployed to DigiTar's production servers on April 12th, 2006. So you can start using it right away! As always, there is no action required to take advantage of the upgrade! If you have questions at all regarding the upgrade, please do not hesitate to contact DigiTar Support.

Note: Update documentation to reflect the new interface enhancements will be available via DigiTar Support soon.

Sentinel Messaging? Portal April 2006 - New Features:

  • Button Re-arrangement - The "Delete" button and "More Choices..." menu have been re-located. Instead of their old positions next to the "Release" button, they are now on the far right of the button bars at the top and bottom of the Quarantine list. This will reduce the ability for the "Delete" button to be accidentally hit, when the "Release" button was really what someone wanted to hit.

  • "Whitelist" Button - We've taken the "Add to Whitelist" option from the "More Choices..." menu and given its own button called "Whitelist". You can find the "Whitelist" button next to the "Release" button. When you hit the new "Whitelist" button, the Portal will release all of the messages you've selected to your inbox and add their senders to your whitelist. You could think of it as your friendly "Release" button on steroids.

  • "Empty Quarantine Option (a.k.a "Delete Everything" is Back)" - After a short vacation, the "Delete Everything" option is back! Like most folks back from a vacation, its better than ever. In this case, that means "Delete Everything" is now called "Empty Quarantine". It can still be found on the "More Choices..." menu, and it still deletes EVERY message in your quarantine. However, with the new name it is hopefully less confusing. We've also changed the confirmation
message you get when you click "Empty Quarantine" to more clearly describe what's about to happen.

  • Tooltips - Sometimes its not immediately apparent what the "Release", "Whitelist" and "Delete" buttons do, or how to use the "Search" box. In these cases, you probably don't want to whip out your manual, so we've added tooltips to these items. When you place your mouse over the various buttons on the button bar, or hover over the "Search" box, a small tooltip will pop-up with instructions on what the item you're hovering over does.

Effective whitelisting pointers...

August 23, 2005
Ever wonder why a whitelist entry doesn't seem to work?

Been workin' to train Sentinel Messaging™ to allow through some newsletter that looks a lot like spam?

We get questions like these occaisionally from y'all and we'd like to help you get a better picture of what's going on behind the scenes...and how best to resolve the situation.

My whitelist entry doesn't seem to work?

We get this one somewhat regularly from new users. You know how it goes....you type in the address manually or select "Add to Whitelist" from the Sentinel Messaging™ portal. The address appears on your whitelist, and voilá...e-mail from that address never gets caught again...right?

Normally that's the way it works. However, sometimes e-mail senders lie. Yeah...its amazing, but they do. Sometimes the "From" field in the e-mail isn't actually the address that the sender gives Sentinel Messaging™ when they try to deliver it. Let's take an example.

I like to get daily newsletters from C|Net. According to Outlook (and my Sentinel Messaging™ quarantine) they appear to come from news@cnet.com. The reality is that when C|Net tries to deliver the newsletter, they tell Sentinel Messaging™ that the e-mail is from bounced-oum-156575555-1705@lyris.cnet.com or some other bizarre looking e-mail address. So obviously, my whitelist entry that says news@cnet.com isn't going to match that. Naturally then, the message gets spam processed...and its a newsletter, so it looks a LOT like spam and gets quarantined.

So how can you and I get around this little deception and make the whitelist work for us? It's actually really simple. You need to add a wildcard whitelist entry. A "what" say you? A wildcard whitelist entry is a whitelist entry that matches only part of the e-mail address instead of all of it. Let's take a look at what a wildcard whitelist entry looks like.

A wildcard whitelist entry would look like this: *cnet.com

That star at the front of it is the wildcard. The entry says match any sender e-mail address that ends in cnet.com and whitelist that e-mail. Basically, you put the star where you want the whitelist entry to match every possible combination of letters in the address. So john* would whitelist every e-mail from every e-mail address that started with john...like john@news.com.

In the context of newsletters that fake part of the e-mail address, wildcard whitelist entries allow you to whitelist the sender e-mail addresses even though parts of the sender address change every time the e-mail is sent. So if you whitelist a newsletter sender and it continues to get caught...try a wildcard whitelist entry instead.

The easiest way to figure out how to make your wildcard whitelist entry is to simply whitelist the sender's domain. To do that just type *domainname.com as your whitelist entry in the Sentinel Messaging™ portal (where domainname.com is the domain of the sender you wish to whitelist).

For more information on using wildcard whitelisting check out:
How do I...Add an entire domain/company to my whitelist?

For more information on how to use whitelisting in general, please check out the video tutorial in DigiTar University.

New "sites" and sounds...

August 08, 2005
Lot's of things are changing around DigiTar these days. Most notably, you may have noticed our new look! Besides deeper informational content on our website, our new look now extends to DigiTar Support. It's a brand-new way to better service our customers!

Here are some of the highlights of our face-lift:

* Global Heads-Up-Display - Our main page now sports a global statistical view of the message streams we are processing. It helps us keep you apprised of not only how well we're doing on your messages, but what we're seeing as spam trends across all the messages we process on a daily basis.

* DigiTar University - Ever get confused by a FAQ? We spend a lot of time making sure our FAQs and How do I...'s are as intuitive as possible. There are times though, that no matter how well you write it, a picture just says it a 1000 times better. DigiTar University enables you to watch a video on any of the common activities and questions you might have regarding your Sentinel Messaging™ service.

* Blogs - Yup. We got 'em. In fact, you're reading our corporate one right now! So you no longer have to go unanswered when you wonder "What were they thinking?!". We want to communicate with you what we're seeing and how we approach things. Strangely enough...we'd also like you to comment on it. You're really a part of the DigiTar family, and we'd like you to join in on the discussion!

This spirit of change is constant here...so continue to expect many new features and improvements to the services you've come to rely on! As things change, we'll be posting news items and notices right here. Come back often and add us to your RSS reader. If you get a chance, please browse an employee blog or two on the right.

Thank you for using DigiTar. It is truly our privilege to serve you.
